A CAR used by a lifesaving group of first responders has been put out of action after it was driven into by a van driver who then failed to stop.

Thorncombe Community First Responders respond to medical emergencies in support of South Western Ambulance Service.

As a group of community volunteers, the responders are often able to reach patients and provide life-saving support whilst an ambulance is on its way. They are frequently are called upon, often 30-40 times a month, and the car is used to take them and the equipment they need, including their emergency response bag, oxygen, defibrillators and other essential items.

On Saturday, February 16, a responder was travelling to an emergency on the High Street, Chard, at about 4am when a white van made a U-turn, causing it to drive into the nearside rear wheel of the responder car. The van driver did not stop and the car was left unusable. The responder could not get to the incident and had to radio in for support.

The responders were out of action and could not support emergencies in the area. Fortunately, Hibbard’s Garage in Thorncombe has loaned them a courtesy car while the car is assessed and repaired.

The first responders are now looking for your help, and say any donations to help keep them on the road will be 'gratefully received.'

If you saw the incident, contact Avon and Somerset Police, quoting crime number AS20190216-0173.

Thorncombe was the first ever Community First Responder group to be established in the country more than 20 years ago and are the blueprint for what is now a nationwide volunteer service.

They are one of very few groups which maintain cover 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week.
