Police are hunting for a dog owner after three pregnant ewes died after an attack.

A dog was reported to be loose in a field of sheep near Redbridge Road Crossways at approximately 7.45am on Monday, February 11.

One sheep was injured in the attack and subsequently died.

Two other sheep died shortly after the incident which police said was likely to be as a result of the stress caused when the dog was in the field.

All three of the sheep were pregnant so their unborn lambs also died as a result of the attack.

Police are now urging anyone who may have any information which could lead to the identification of the owner to come forward.

The force has also issued a stark reminder to dog owners that livestock worrying is an offence and owners risk a fine of up to £1,000 or six month imprisonment.

A spokesman for Dorset Police said: "Please be a responsible dog owners when out enjoying the countryside and keep all dogs on a lead around livestock."

Worrying is traditionally thought of as a dog biting or attacking livestock but dog owners are reminded it also means:

  • Chasing livestock in such a way as may be reasonably expected to cause injury or suffering.
  • In the case of ewes, this includes abortion or loss or reduction in the number of offspring she has.
  • Not having a dog on a lead or under close control when close by, or in a field or enclosure with livestock
