THE community in Weymouth is being invited to take part in a craft project with a special message.

The ‘Crossroads’ project will sees churches, schools and volunteers of all ages creating crosses as a symbol of reaching a turning point in life or and to mark the death and resurrection of Jesus.

The crosses will then be attached to a giant cross on display over the Easter period at St Mary’s Church in the town centre.

The event carries on from the success of the ‘100 Years On’ project, which saw thousands of paper doves created and put on display to commemorate 100 years since the end of the First World War.

Members of the community can contribute to the latest project by attending craft sessions at Weymouth Library on Wednesdays from 10am to noon, with all materials supplied on the premises.

Two primary schools have joined, with pupils from St Nicholas & St Laurence School and St John's taking part.

Pupils are being asked to help make crosses and write a one side A4 piece of work about what the cross means to them.

Other schools have been invited to engage in the project.

Julie Hursthouse, community development officer for Weymouth & Portland Borough Council said: “Following on the fantastic success of the Dove project, St Mary’s Church along with other community groups and the council are inviting the community to take part in Crossroads.

“The project involves making crosses, either remembering the death and resurrection of Jesus or reaching a turning point in your life, choosing what path to follow.

“The idea is simple but will be very visual.”

Mayor of Weymouth and Portland Gill Taylor said: “This is a wonderful idea to engage with the communities across Weymouth and Portland.

“The idea is that the crosses represent either a new journey, a crossroads in your life, and maybe now is a good time to make new choices along a more positive path.

“This project is very loosely linked to mental health but also the religious festivals.

“I really look forward to seeing the display in the town centre.”

The work will be displayed in St. Mary’s Church over the Easter period.
