'West Bay Days' held their annual general meeting last week at The George public house.

After giving £8,000 in grants to beneficiaries, they are looking for more people to stand as committee members. So if you possess organisational skills, or can spare some time to help plan and present their four annual events, they would be pleased to see you.

The four events are Pirates' Day on Sunday, May 26, on Fisherman's Green; West Bay Day on Sunday, August 4, held throughout the Bay; Bonfire on the Beach on Saturday, October 26, and the Lighting of the Christmas Tree and carols in St. John's Church and on Harbour Green on Sunday, December 1.

Nominations to become beneficiaries are also sought and can best be submitted by email by contacting westbaydays.com.

Last Saturday in Bucky doo Square the Heritage Coast Canoe Club were busy promoting their activities. Based in West Bay, they have a fleet of kayaks, canoes, and sea boats for everyone to use. All equipment is provided, but you must be at least 12 years old - you don't even need to be particularly fit. The club meets every Tuesday at 6pm (aiming to be on water by 6.30pm) from April to September. Fun and also serious instruction takes place. More can be discovered by contacting them at westbaykayak.co.uk or telephone on 01308 862055.

With February over in a couple of weeks, we need to bear in mind that the Discovery Centre will soon be opening its doors again. This seasons activities and items of interest include a model boat exhibition. Don't forget the wonderful display of boats in St. John's Church while you are in the Bay. During half term, the Discovery Centre is holding a week of fun entitled 'get colouring the seaside'. Entry is free but donations are always welcome.

Last Friday's snow disastrously affected the closure of all the public toilets in the area. Our town clerk, Will Austin, did his best to secure some facilities but received an unsatisfactory response from the West Dorset District Council stating that we would have to wait until Monday. He says that it is not good enough, and I wholeheartedly agree. The town council tried to take over the local management of the toilets late last year but the Dorset Council (which doesn't officially come into being until April) put a stop to that idea.

Some local hostelries and business premises were kind enough to offer alternative facilities. Will kindly apologised to all for the inconvenience.
