Two crews of firefighters attended HMP/YOI Portland this afternoon after a fire started in a prisoner’s cell.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue were alerted to the incident at 2.28pm.

A spokesman for the fire service said: “Two crews from Weymouth and Portland attended a cell fire at the Grove in Portland.

“The fire started in a prisoner’s accommodation cell and involved a bed. They used two sets of breathing apparatus and one hose reel jet to extinguish the fire."

The fire crews returned to their stations at 2.54pm. 

The prison service has since issued a statement about the incident.

It says: "Prison staff successfully put out a small fire in a cell at HMP Portland. No-one was harmed during the incident and the cell is already back in use. The local fire service were called as a precaution."
