LOCAL government change will lead to a spate of Honorary Aldermen being appointed in Weymouth and Portland.

Normally the title is only given sporadically – but this year, because the Weymouth and Portland Borough is being disbanded a host of currently serving councillors, and one former councillor, are likely to get the title at the same time.

A resolution before Thursday's meeting of the borough suggests having a special meeting in February to confer the title on 11 serving councillors and one former member.

The title can only apply to councillors “who had been, or were entitled to be elected Mayor of Weymouth and Portland during their term of office.

In addition, such persons should have served for at least ten civic years on the council.”

The council does not quantify the cost of the decisions but says it will amount to paying for scrolls, badges of office and a Mayor's parlour reception.

The councillors, and one ex-councillor, being considered for the Alderman role are - Cllr K Brookes, Cllr H Bruce, Cllr C James, Cllr P R Kimber, Cllr R Kosior, Cllr M Leicester, Cllr P Nixon, Cllr G Taylor, Cllr M Tewkesbury, Cllr K Wheller and Mr I Roebuck.
