A driver on the way to a Tinder date had their car seized by police.

Officers from the Dorset Police No Excuse team were out in West Dorset at the weekend, when a Mazda RX-8 was caught on their camera for having no insurance.

Police stopped the car and the driver admitted to not being insured, but said they had made the decision to drive anyway because they were on their way to meet someone they had met through online dating website Tinder.

It was one of a number of incidents in the area as police continue to crack down on driving offences.

Two drivers were caught on their mobile phones - one doing so in front of police officers - and two other drivers were arrested for drug driving.

A spokesman for the team said: “One driver was stopped on their phone, they were driving towards Lyme Regis chatting away, turning right into a side road still on the phone...they were given a ticket for six points and a £200 fine.

“Another was on the phone as he pulls into the petrol station, driving right past us chatting away. They were also given a ticket for six points and a £200 fine.”

Another car was seized when it was flagged for having no insurance. Police said the woman driver told officers it was her son’s car, and she believed she was covered under her own insurance. This was not the case.

Police also urged people to check the tread depth on their tyres. One driver was caught with tyres under the legal minimum tread depth of 1.6mm. The driver was arrested.

A police spokesman added: “While the festive period has passed it is still vital you ensure your vehicle is winter ready, that includes checking your tyres - in poor weather they are the only thing keeping you on the road.”

Dorset Police runs Op Dragoon, which aims to take some of the country’s most dangerous driving offenders off the roads by identifying and targeting prolific offenders.
