Police have some advice to ensure residents stay safe this Christmas.
The force says there are three crimes that usually increase this time of year – pickpockets, burglary and online fraud.
Regarding pickpockets, a Dorset Police spokesman said: "With town centres getting ever more crowded with shoppers in the run up to the big day, thieves are also busy. Please keep your handbags and wallets securely shut and keep them close to you. Wallets and mobile phones should always be carried in your front pockets. Purse bells are available from your local Neighbourhood Police Team."
To prevent burglars, police say when out and about leave your home lit and secure. Close blinds or curtains and leave any valuables, including presents, out of view and if going away for Christmas tell a neighbour and ask them to keep an eye on your home.
If buying presents online, shoppers should follow the festive ‘ELF’ rule this Christmas to ensure they don’t fall victim to a scam:
* Explore the website - Is it reputable? Have you heard of it before?
* Look for the padlock - A secure website will have a padlock at the start of the address. This indicates that the site is secure
* Finances – Pay securely via PayPal or with a credit card for extra peace of mind – these payment methods offer you payment protection
