A homeless shelter in Weymouth has been given a cash boost thanks to money raised from selling scampi and chips.

Last summer, Fish ‘n’ Fritz on Market Street, donated £1 from each portion of scampi and chips to The Bus Shelter Dorset.

Paul Hay, the owner of Fish ‘n’ Fritz, visited the bus shelter in Lodmoor to present a cheque to Emily McCarron, the charity’s founder.

This is the second summer Fish ’n’ Fritz has run its scampi and chips promotion and this year they managed to raise £250.

Paul said: “We launched our scampi and chips promotions last year to complement the work we do with the local homeless community with our ‘suspended coffee’ scheme. The scampi promotion was so well supported last year we decided to continue running it across the summer this year, in fact, it’s still running now and that’s down to our generous customers.”

The coffee scheme allows you to buy a coffee and donate it to someone else.

He added: “Emily and her team have done such a great job over the last year and we are incredibly proud to be working with them and support this hard working charity.”

Emily McCarron from The Bus Shelter Dorset said: “We are really grateful for all the support we have received from the local community.

“It’s donations like this from Paul that helps us keep running and provided this much needed service. We are open every day of the year and we encourage people in need to pop in and see us at any time.”

Mr Hay opened Fish n Fritz in 1997. Over the last three years, customers of Fish n Fritz have generously suspended many coffees ready and waiting for those in need.

The Bus Shelter Dorset is a charity which aims to end the need for anyone to sleep rough in Weymouth and Portland.

The service offers around the clock 365 days a year support from a converted double decker bus in the beach car park.

The mobile shelter houses 17 beds for rough sleepers where they can sleep safely and off the streets.

The charity works alongside other agencies to encourage users of the bus to move into suitable accommodation and to change the cycle of homelessness in order to integrate back into society. People who use the bus are able to have access to a postal address to apply for work, register with a GP and make benefit claims.
