LYME Regis town councillors could change their position on a pedestrian crossing in the town, following the county council’s decision to over-turn the recommendation to refuse it.

Town councillors previously voted in support of the installation of the town’s first crossing - which would be placed half-way up the main street between Joules and the Pug and Puffin shop with a minimum loss of four to five parking spaces - which was originally recommended by officers to be turned down.

However, Dorset County Council’s regulatory committee agreed the scheme should go ahead and recommended approval for the £85,000 crossing, which will be discussed at the next county council cabinet meeting. More can be read here.

Town councillors agreed to hold an extraordinary meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, December 19, to discuss the crossing and hopefully rescind their support for the plans.

Cllr Jeff Scowen said: “I actually voted for it, but I would change my vote having really spoken to a lot of people.

“This council should look at this again and should vote because I think our position may have changed.”

Cllr Brian Larcombe said that this was ‘vital’ and that they needed to reverse their decision, with Cllr Daryl Turner stating that the people they are trying to help - those with mobility or sight problems - may be the people that will suffer most from the crossing due to the amount of on-street parking that will be lost.

Cllr Cheryl Reynolds spoke in favour of the scheme at the county council’s regulatory committee meeting, which also put forward a recommendation for the town council and highways to look at moving the bus stop currently outside the Post Office to another location.

She said: “They [the regulatory committee] made two recommendations that the crossing should be put forward because we are probably the only town that hasn’t got some kind of crossing, and that we need not discriminate against people with mobility problems, sight problems or any other problems.

“I have to remind council that we had 630 signatures in favour of the pedestrian crossing.”

The meeting will take place at the Guildhall at 7pm on Wednesday, December 19.
