PRESTIGIOUS AWARD: Active Beaminster School pupil and Girl Guide Vicky Smith has worked her way to the prestigious Baden Powell Trefoil Award.

She had to show her knowledge of Guiding history, the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, the European Community and the Commonwealth as well as accumulating a number of badges.

CLOSE SHAVE: Lyme youth leader Phil Lathey called in the fuzz last week to help him get rid of some facial fungus, the beard he had nurtured lovingly for six months.

Youngsters watched with interest as Special WPC Karen Hoskins, representing West Dorset police, performed her public duty with the razor, "cleaning up a dangerous looking area."

Phil made his sacrifice in aid of Lyme Regis Boy's Club, raising around £80 for their coffers through sponsorship.

CHARITY: Encouraging Christmas shoppers to part with small change were smiling Bridport Round Tablers Adrian Humphries, Simon Ludgate, Malcolm Stripp, Ray Poole and Richard Cozens.

The friendly fivesome were collecting to help finance the Round Table's Christmas party for the town's elderly.

SET SAIL: A West Dorset parson's son is planning to sail to the West Indies in a boat he made himself on the Rectory lawn.

He is 27-year-old Donald Buller Ridler, second son of the Rev and Mrs C. H. B. Ridler of Burton Bradstock.

COME ABOARD: The mayor and mayoress of Bridport, Ald and Mrs Harold Smith, were "piped aboard" when they visited the Christmas Fair run by the West Bay Sea Scouts.

Opening the fair, Mr Smith recalled that he had been involved with Scouting since he was a boy.

EARLY PRESENT: Thanks to the magnificent efforts of workers at the Cobb Arms, Christmas is going to come early for more than 200 senior citizens this year.

On December, 21 they will receive gift parcels, paid for out of the £130 raised at the popular Lyme public house during the year.
