THIS weekend there will be a clean-up of Chesil Beach and you can get involved for free.
Councillor Rob Hughes, who has created this event, said: “I only decided yesterday to organize this after seeing how much plastic had been washed up on the beach by last week’s storms.
“This is the worst I have ever seen the beach. It is so bad. We had had a lot of storms after being on the beach all summer and that has had its effect.
“We hope that lots of people will turn out to help us. Weymouth beach gets raked and cleaned because it is sand but Chesil beach needs local people like me to pitch in and we all need to do our bit.
“Dorset waste partnership are providing bags and litter sticks for us and the court leet has provided us with a skip as well.”
Thanks in part to Sir David Attenborough’s Blue Planet II, the levels of plastic pollution in the world’s oceans has been a prominent issue for conservationists in recent years.
This plastic is often washed up onto the beaches, with Surfers Against Sewage reporting that over 150 plastic bottles litter each mile of UK beaches.
To help clean up Chesil Beach, join the group at the top of Brandy Row on Portland by the flood gates. The clean up will be from 10am to 12pm on Sunday, December 16.
