A RETAILER moving to a premises in Bridport has been told its signage is ‘garish’ and a different colour scheme would be preferred.
Discount book shop The Works is due to open at the former New Look store on East Street and has applied to West Dorset District Council for permission for four signs.
It’s hoping to place an illuminated sign on the outside of the shop and put in place an illuminated projection sign, window display and overhead door sign in its trademark yellow and blue colours. But at a meeting of Bridport Town Council’s planning committee, councillors objected to the proposals as the colour of the design ‘was not in keeping with the town’s character.’
Cllr Sarah Williams felt the plans negatively impacted the conservation area and asked that ‘more suitable’ plans be brought back to the council. Cllr Dave Rickard agreed, saying: “It’s garish. But it’s a difficult one when it’s their corporate signage.” The town council has asked that a colour scheme ‘more in keeping’ with the area and Grade I-listed town hall be used.
