CURRENT and former governors and special guest, Lord Lieutenant of Dorset, Angus Campbell, gathered at Beaminster School to recognise Dr Shirley Preston’s huge contribution to the school.

After 30 years, Dr Preston has stepped down from her role as governor at Beaminster School.

During that time, she has been involved in nearly all aspects of the school’s development, from planting the woods at the bottom of the school field, to getting the science block completed and moving the school from its boarding school days, to her work with the Frances Tucker Fund, which has helped to build both the school’s learning resource centre and to make the new music suite a reality.

The group came together for a tree-planting ceremony for Dr Preston, helped by Mr Campbell who also gave a speech about her many achievements.

They planted a native oak tree at the front of the school and Dr Preston was presented with gifts, including a cut glass tumbler engraved with the school crest.

Dr Preston will be continuing her work in supporting farmers and developing co-operatives across Europe.

Keith Hales, headteacher at Beaminster School, said: “It has been a real privilege to work with Shirley over the last few years, and to have the benefit of her vast experience, knowledge and genuine affection for the school.

“She will be greatly missed, and the warm thanks and very best wishes of the whole school community go with her for the future.”
