BE OUR GUEST: Guest of honour at the Bridport branch of the Royal Naval Association's annual dinner at the Eype's Moth Hotel was Lieutenant Commander Sean O'Reilly, commander of the town's new namesake ship.

The dinner was attended by 88 members and guests, who heard Cmdr O'Reilly say how impressed he was at the interest shown by the townsfolk, including RNA members and Sea Cadets, in the new HMS Bridport minehunter, which was commissioned earlier this month.

DONATION: Safeway presented cheques to two local groups when it opened on Tuesday.

The company's managing director, Andy Morris, presented cheques for £250 to Eileen Evans, vice-chairman of the Bridport branch of the Alzheimer's Disease Society, and to Paul Barnett, management committee member of the Dorset Respite and Hospice Trust.

GOOD SAMARITANS: Cash raised by the Bridport Friends of the Samaritans is helping to ensure continued coverage of the town by the organisation.

The group have raised £525 this year and a flag day in Bridport brought in a further £420.

LAST TALK: At the 78th annual meeting of the West Dorset Bee Keeping Association at the Colfox School on Saturday, the president and chairman (Mr F.J. Miller) addressed the members for the last time as chairman.

He thanked members and especially the committee for their loyal support over nearly 20 years and stressed the point that the future success of the association depended largely on the enthusiasm of members.

WE ARE SAILING: Lyme Regis and the local sailing club were becoming well known throughout the whole of the sailing world because of the activities of members of the organisation, said the Commodore (Mr Peter Bradley) at the annual dinner in the Woodroffe School Hall on Saturday.

WET WAIT: Passengers waiting at Maiden Newton to catch the train to Bridport may soon have to contend with watery waits.

The canopy over the branch line platform is being demolished because of its age and is not being replaced.
