A driver was caught using two phones at the wheel at the same time.

Dorset Police's No Excuse team, set up to crack down on bad driving and make road safer, said the incident was "a first for the team."

Officers said the woman, who was caught in Bridport, had one phone in between her ear and shoulder and was "chatting away". She also had a second mobile, positioned at the bottom of the steering wheel, which she was using to send text messages.

She was reported for the offence and handed a £200 fine along with six penalty points on her licence.

It was just one incident the No Excuse team came across.

Dorset Police launched the No Excuse road safety campaign in January 2010 in an attempt to reduce the numbers killed and seriously injured on roads throughout the county.

In October 2014, a new dedicated team took over the running of No Excuse enforcement, aiming to stop dangerous driving by tackling the ‘fatal five’ – speeding, failure to wear seatbelts, driving using a phone, drink/drug driving, and careless or inconsiderate driving.

Speaking previously, Sergeant Joe Pardey, from the Alliance Roads Policing department, said: “Using a mobile phone at the wheel can have devastating consequences, not only to you and those around you, but other road users. We want to make using a mobile whilst driving as socially unacceptable as drink or drug driving."

The team dealt with a number of other offences in the Bridport area last week.

Thirteen people were stopped in the space of three hours for allegedly driving in excess of the 50mph speed limit along the A35 at Eype.

All were said to be driving above 70mph – and two drivers are now set to appear in court for allegedly driving at 76mph and 80mph.

Officers also attended the Melpash area after complaints from residents.

Five people were stopped and dealt with for driving at speeds ranging from 40mph to 51mph in a 30mph zone. The person allegedly driving at 51mph was sent to court and faces either six points or a ban. The rest were offered driver awareness courses.

A spokesman for the No Excuse team said most of the drivers were local to the area.

Earlier in the week, a driver was fined £100 and given three points on their licence after ignoring a red light.

They were stopped by Dorset Police's No Excuse team who were patrolling the Purbeck area. Officers found the driver had already completed a driver awareness course and issued the fine and points.

Cllr Daryl Turner, Dorset County Council's cabinet member for natural and built environment, said:

"The county council is committed to reducing the number of people killed and seriously injured on Dorset roads.

"We work with partner organisations on a number of initiatives including; education, enforcement and engineering."
