A local legend named for the Poppy Appeal danced the night away with friends and families to mark a special birthday.

As reported by the Dorset Echo, Poppy Butcher turned 90 yesterday.

Born in 1928 on November 11, her parents named her Poppy in dedication to Remembrance Day.

A party was held at the National Sailing Academy on Portland on Saturday, attended by Mayor of Weymouth and Portland Cllr Gill Taylor, who presented Mrs Butcher with a bouquet on behalf of not only the borough but all the residents of Weymouth and Portland for all she does for charity.

Cllr Taylor said that Poppy is very inspirational with her energy, enthusiasm and dedication to the various charities she works with, especially her work with the veterans.

Mrs Butcher's daughter, Denise Nash, sang The Old Lamplighter as a tribute to her mother. Her grandson, Joe Butcher dedicated a song he had written about Portland to his grandmother. Mrs Butcher's favourite band Replay than performed.
