West Bay and Lyme Regis harbours are on flood alert this evening.

It will come into force at 7.30pm and remain in place for two hours.

Flooding may already be affecting properties, low lying areas and roads.

The forecast wind direction is Southerly, Force 9.

In West Bay, the public is advised to stay away from East Beach and the esplanade and harbour area as the combination of large waves and very strong, gale force winds will be extremely dangerous.

Forecast heavy rain during the day could lead to tide locking of the inner harbour as levels in the River Brit rise.

Water levels in the rivers in West Dorset, including the Lym, Winniford, Char, Simene, Brit, Asker, Mangerton and Bride, are expected to rise.

Main areas of concern are the Lower Brit and Lower Bride if rising water levels coincide with the peak water level at 7.15pm this evening.

The public is advised to stay away from Lyme Regis harbour as a result of strong winds and rain causing high waves.

Property owners with flood protection equipment should consider installing it now.
