A CLUB is hoping that the power of storytelling will see people make generous donations at a fundraising event.

The Flying Monkeys are teaming up with grassroots organisation We Shall Overcome to put on a packed evening of storytelling for grown-ups to raise money for Cupboard Love food bank in Bridport.

The group, who meet in The Woodman on the first Thursday of every month, entertain, delight (and occasionally horrify) listeners with a variety of stories told.

The theme for the night is 'Day of the Dead', which will focus on the thinning of the veil between worlds, unseen watchers, open minds and hearts, celebrating and remembering the dead.

Entertainment will include stories, songs, a raffle, with a chance to win prizes kindly donated by local businesses.

Cupboard Love support many people from all walks of life, who for a variety of reasons, need a little extra support financially.

The food bank, which is open on Wednesday mornings at St Mary's Church, does not hand out money, and can help people's money go further by providing emergency food at times of need.

It is reliant on the community for donations of food, time and money.

The Flying Monkeys and We Shall Overcome hope that the event will encourage people to provide any support they can, as well as providing entertainment to the community, whether it be to those who donate or those who have needed the support themselves.

Co-organiser of the event, Rose Allwork, said: "We're delighted to be able to support Cupboard Love as they fill the increasing gap in state support for people in need.

"Much as we'd prefer that food banks weren't needed, it's down to us to support them in any way we can."

Donations such as UHT milk, coffee, sugar, tinned meats, rice, rice pudding, tinned fruit, pasta sauces and toiletries would be greatly appreciated.

The fundraising evening will take place today (Thursday, November 1) at The Woodman from 7.30pm until 10pm.

Donations of food and cash can be brought to The Woodman on the night, and entry is free.
