GOLDEN CELEBRATIONS: More than 100 past and present members of Chideock Farmers' Discussion Club celebrated the organisation's 50th anniversary at a dinner dance at Highlands End Farm holiday park, Eype.

Formed during the Second World War to support the war effort and grow plenty of food, the club took on women members in the late 1940s.

After the war, activities increased to include talks by guest speakers on a variety of topics, with the emphasis on agriculture.

TOP BRASS: Two Beaminster organisations had their funds boosted by a combined total of £350 after Stockport's Williams Fairey Engineering Band appeared in concert at St Mary's Church.

The cash, profit from ticket sales and a raffle, has been donated to Beaminster Parochial Church Council and the women's section of the Royal British Legion.

OPEN DAY: The first open day at Melplash Court Farm made a perfect end to a fine week for National Hunt trainer Bob Buckler.

Not only had three of his horses been placed on their first runs out, but Aahsaylad, his Ladbrookes' charity bet selection for Saturday's Cesarewitch, came in to net a cool £250.

DO OUR BEST: "Scouting doesn't just happen, it is the result of dedicated work by hundreds of volunteers, ordinary people who see Scouting for what it is, a magnificent youth movement., said Mr A.C. Sanctuary (chairman of the West Dorset District Scout Council) at the Knight's Bull Hotel.

The occasion was the presentation of two Queen's Scout badges to two members of First Bridport (St Mary's) Scout Group, taking the total in the troop to nine.

FUNDRAISER: A total of £34 7s. 7d was collected in the Beaminster district in a recent house-to-house collection for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

SUPPER: More than 150 people attended Beaminster Parish Church's annual harvest supper at the Public Hall on Friday evening.

The chief organiser was the vicar's wife, Mrs D Galloway, who was helped by a band of hostesses.

After the meal, the vicar (the Rev D Galloway) thanked everyone who had helped to make the evening such a success.
