Two determined grandfathers are on a mission to promote child literacy.

Lyme grandads Geoff Baker and David Austin, authors of the recently-launched Silly Grandads reading project, have been invited by Dottie Kitchen owner Alethea Mcloughlin to give a reading of their latest children’s stories at a ‘Storytelling Tea Party’ at the bistro on Broad Street.

The aim of the tea party, to take place during the October half term, is to help push the child literacy drive.

Geoff, who devised a campaign to encourage more grandparents to read to their grandchildren and thus help boost child literacy, will read two new stories; Darcey and the Moon and Silly Grandad and the Sandcastle.

Geoff and David, who first began the campaign in 2016 by publishing their Sandy the Wonder Pig stories, will also be signing copies of their books.

“It’s an honour for us grandpops to pop up at a pop-up,” said grandfather-of-three, Geoff.

“Like many people in the town, I’m a huge fan of the variety of fantastic flavours at Dottie Kitchen and I hope that our storytelling may be to the taste of its customers too.

“Dave and I are very grateful to Ali for suggesting a storytelling tea party as the more we can do to help children learn to read and become fascinated by books, the more that those children will benefit.

“Since we re-launched the idea of a child literacy drive last month under the Silly Grandads banner, we have had support from grandparents from across the UK, the USA, Norway, Singapore and Australia.”
