A Lions Club has celebrated making a splash at its 25 annual charity fundraiser.

Bridport Lions Club held its Swimarathon at Bridport Leisure Centre, with 24 teams swimming 1,526 laps of the pool to raise money for the club.

The event is one of the club's biggest fundraisers in the year, and was started by Bridport Mayor, councillor Barry Irvine.

Cllr Irvine took on the role of 'Mr Motivator', going round encouraging each of the 24 teams ahead of their time in the pool.

The competition was split into three classes; junior, senior and mixed.

Sheila Burton, president of Bridport Lions Club, said: "I was delighted to see 24 teams, 13 junior, 10 senior and one mixed, swim a total of 1,526 laps in their 55 minute time slots.

"All were rewarded with doughnuts kindly donated by Leakers Bakery.

"Early indication from sponsor money pledged on the day show a potential total in excess of £4,000.

"We have been able to cover the cost of the event thanks to sponsorship from many local businesses, with others providing some excellent raffle prizes. "I would like to add my thanks to Zone chairman Lion John Cake from Weymouth and Portland Lions Club and Sherry Porter from The Living Tree for their help in lap counting.

"Our next Swimarathon has already been booked for Sunday, October 6 2019 and I hope we can increase the number of teams enabling us to help more groups and individuals in our marvellous community."

Over the 25 years, the event has raised more than £80,000, which has been used to help groups and individuals within Bridport.

Sheila has also gave thanks to all the businesses who provided sponsorship to the event, helping make it so successful.

Medals, cups and trophy winners will be presented to participants at a presentation evening at Highlands End Eype on Thursday, November 29.

The club is currently looking for more members to help join its current pool of fundraisers.

Members range from being in their early 20s to late 60s, and all will be welcome.
