After miserable weather dominated the weekend, clear skies made way for a spectacular Harvest Moon display this week.

The full moon closest to the autumn equinox, called the Harvest Moon, shone across Dorset on Monday night (24), with stunning pictures of the spectacle flooding in from Echo Camera Club members.

The moon, which appears larger than usual, filled the sky with pink and orange hues at it rose with some keen photographers even managing to capture the detail of the moon's surface.

Helen Moore, from Weymouth, said: "I took the moon photos from our bedroom window, the sky was so clear and it lit our room up. I just had to go and take some photos."

Peter Harriman took more than 100 shots of the full moon as it rose over the sea in Weymouth. He said: "The photos were taken from my flat in Royal Terrace. As it rose, the pinkness turned to orangey-yellow."

And Gareth James, from Swanage, said: "I had worked out with an app which direction and time the full moon would be rising so I sat on Swanage Beach.

"The moon rose at 7:15pm and was bright orange which gradually faded the higher it rose in the sky. The sun was setting behind me which kept the pier illuminated and there was hardly any wind so the conditions were perfect."

The Harvest Moon, which rises shortly after sunset, had appeared full since Sunday night, providing several evenings of bright moonlight this week. Historically, the moon is said to have signified the time when farmers would harvest the crops they had grown throughout the year, allowing them more time to work at night.

It is followed by the next full moon in October which is known as the Hunter's Moon.
