I am writing following ongoing disappointment with my local GP surgery regarding ear irrigation and its lack of funding.

My 85-year-old mother relies heavily on her two hearing aids, having practically no hearing without them.

Wearing these aids is known to cause a build-up of wax which will render their use inadequate, causing distress and isolation.

It has been stated by her GP, and is written on its website, that ear irrigation is no longer funded by the CCG.

I have been present during a GP consultation when it was stated the procedure was no longer available at the practice.

A leaflet was handed over telling us how to self-treat blocked ears and where private treatment may be obtained if unsuccessful - £40 per ear and with a round trip of some 15 miles.

Without family to help, I submit this would be fairly impossible for many of the older generation.

Having worked in the elderly care sector for many years and, as a registered nurse, I am appalled at the lack of compassion and the discrimination associated with your decision.

The elderly and frail need to be able to communicate and the removal of funding for vital procedures is causing unnecessary isolation.
