The life of a sick boy and his mother have been drastically improved thanks to a charitable donation.

Babygear, based in Bridport, heard about Wisdom, a seven year old boy living in Malawi who has encephalitis.

Encephalitis is a condition in which the brain becomes inflamed, and can cause confusion or disorientation, seizures, difficulty speaking and weakness or loss of movements in some parts of the body.

Babygear contacted the charity arm of Mountain Buggy, who are one of their suppliers, and within a week a Terrain Buggy had arrived in Bridport ready to be taken out by the volunteers of the Hooke Court in Malawi summer programme.

Derwent Walsh, managing director of Babygear, said: "Due to the terrain in this region of Malawi, Wisdom didn't just need a pushchair, he needed a Range Rover of a pushchair.

"Babygear were delighted to play a part in making this happen and they would like to express their thanks to Mountain Buggy for their generosity."

Campbell Gower, chief executive of Mountain Buggy, said: "Charity work is an important part of what we do, and have done for the past 20 years at phil&teds and Mountain Buggy. So when Babygear Bridport told us about Wisdom we genuinely wanted to help."

A container with donations to one of the Hooke Court supported schools in Bandawe arrived in July, which saw books, maths and science resources, sewing machines, clothes and bikes donated to the classes.

Mandy Cooper, a trustee of Hooke Court in Malawi was in Bandawe in early August when Wisdom was presented with his new form of transport.

Mandy said: "Everyone here is amazed at how quickly a miracle happened. Thank you so much for the donation and to all those who made it happen. Mum is all beams as well as Wisdom."

Since receiving the donation, Wisdom and his mother have found using the buggy has improved their day-to-day life, and that Wisdom loves his buggy so much that he is refusing to get out of it.

The Hooke Court in Malawi charity was established in 2015, having been involved with nine schools in the Bandawe area of the country since 2011.

The charity aims to help improve standards of primary education in the nine schools by providing UK-trained teachers to give advice and help in and out of the classroom as well as to fund raise to give the schools basic resources.
