The future of a weekly car boot sale, which raises thousands of pounds for charity, is safe - for now.

Bridport Town Council took over the running of a popular car boot sale at West Bay Road car park, West Bay, from West Dorset District Council (WDDC) - which owns the car park - for a trial period four weeks ago.

The trial is ongoing 'pending decisions from relevant members at the town council and district council,' according to WDDC, but this has caused confusion amongst members of the public and stallholders as to whether the event will continue to go ahead each Sunday.

Bridport Town Council has confirmed it will continue to run the car boot sale until September 12, when members of its finance and general purposes committee will meet to discuss whether it will continue to manage the event indefinitely.

A spokesman for the town council said although a decision won't be made until next month, the town council 'at this stage sees no reason why it would not carry on running [the car boot sale].'

Should the town council decide not to continue its involvement, WDDC has confirmed the car boot sale will continue until the end of the season in October.

The car boot sale has been faced with uncertainty since June, when WDDC closed the car park for resurfacing work and launched a consultation into whether or not the event should return and continue at the same location once they were completed.

A survey found a majority were in favour of the car boot sale remaining at West Bay and Bridport Town Council expressed an interest in taking over its management.

The income received by WDDC from the car boot sale is used to provide funding for community projects in the area, and £12,800 was raised for such causes in 2017.

The fund, distributed annually, goes to local community and voluntary organisations in and around West Bay and Bridport to benefit projects operating or supporting residents living in these areas.
