A man has been injured after falling off scaffolding.

Emergency services were called to Buddle Bridge, near Bridge Street in Lyme Regis, shortly after 8am today.

A spokesman for Dorset Police said: "Police were on the scene helping the ambulance service with road closures, fire were also on the scene.

"A man had fallen off some scaffolding."

Dorset County Council has been repairing the medieval Buddle Bridge since June 11.

A spokesman for South Western Ambulance Service said a helicopter air rescue team attended as well an ambulance, four-wheel drive ambulances, two rapid response vehicles and an operations officer.

The man has been taken to Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital with reports of a leg injury.

The road re-opened just after 10am.

A spokesman for Dorset County Council said work to the bridge had been completed and following an inspection from English Heritage, the scaffolding was due to be dismantled today.

The spokesman said: "The access hatch to the scaffolding had been secured with thick rope and two planks which appears to have been removed by an individual to gain entry to the scaffolding without permission."

Cllr Daryl Turner, the council’s cabinet member for the natural and built environment, said: “We take the health and safety of our employees and the public very seriously.

"Construction sites can be dangerous places and security measures are put in place to prevent incidents.”
