Big-hearted fundraisers made a splash for charity in one of West Dorset’s wackiest events.

Locals and visitors donned fancy dress to raise more than £2,000 for the RNLI at the annual West Bay raft race.

This year's event attracted 18 teams which battled their way down the River Brit while spectators looking on from the harbour.

Participants created their themed rafts before launching them into the water and hoping they stayed afloat.

First home was Bridport firm Huck Nets, closely followed by Bridport Round Table.

Best dressed in the competition went to the team at The Cherry Tree, members of which all dressed up as strawberries to navigate the ‘Berry Ferry.’

The most entertaining team was Bridport Building Supplies and the team with the top sponsorship was the Lord Nelson pub.

Annie Taylor, organiser of the RNLI raft race, said: “It was brilliant and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. The public love this event.

“The George Hotel came up trumps as usual and the weather helped. Thanks goes to the harbour master, sponsors and the RNLI team who have been brilliant as always. Thank you to the coastguard, lifeguard and St John's Ambulance."

Events such as the raft race are key for the RNLI, which relies largely on donation and volunteer to continue its lifesaving work.

"It's so important, particularly in an area like this," said Ms Taylor. "In the summer you've got things like fishing trips and more people swimming - people get cut off by the tide. It's amazing how many people come here and don't know about the tide coming in."

The raft race, which is always a big hit with spectators, will be back next year.

"Everyone enjoys it," said Ms Taylor. "It is a lot of fun."
