By Jake Lanning, West Bay Coastguard Rescue Team

We’re used to dropping everything in response to a callout. But this month, over a single 72 hour period, we were called out no fewer than five times to search for three separate people who were all described as vulnerable.

We were joined at various times by our colleagues from the Lyme Regis and Wyke Regis rescue teams, a senior Coastguard officer, and both the Solent and St Athan Coastguard rescue helicopters. We worked alongside the police and their helicopter, the ambulance service and air ambulance, the RNLI Lifeboat and DORSAR (Dorset Search & Rescue) in what was a large scale multi-agency response to help search for the missing individuals.

The first person was thankfully found safe and well. The second required medical treatment on scene, followed by a stay in hospital. The third person, tragically, lost their life. Our thoughts remain with the family and friends during this very difficult time.

This 72-hour snapshot really shines a light on the wider challenges that people can face during their lives, and also exposes the fragility of our minds, soul and wellbeing.

For anyone that is struggling inside, we just wanted to say that you're not alone, share the load and #justtalk. Everyday, our dedicated rescue teams and helicopter crews work shoulder to shoulder with other emergency services, responding to those who struggle with deep sadness, stress, anger or are at risk of suicide. We know that every person we rescue has a story and so do our rescuers; and we're here to say that it's ok, not to be ok.

You're not alone; talk to someone you trust. Sharing a problem is often the first step to recovery and there's people here who can help.
