Services between Sutton and West Croydon have been diverted or cancelled after a man died on the track.
British Transport Police said inquiries into the death were ongoing, but that it was not being treated as suspicious.
More than a dozen officers inspected the bridge in King’s Lane and cordoned off the road earlier this afternoon (Wednesday, May 3).
Trains between Sutton and Croydon are expected to be disrupted until 6pm and many services have been diverted or cancelled.
Customer advice on Southern’s website said: “The line between Sutton and West Croydon has been closed to allow a police investigation to take place.
“Following an initial investigation, the line can be reopened to train services however it may be necessary to close the line later today. We will be running services that have not already been diverted away from the line between West Croydon and Sutton.”
