LYME REGIS: Police are urging people to look out for phone scams after an elderly disabled woman was targeted.
On Tuesday January 20 a 70-year-old disabled woman received a phone call, offering her a device that would stop nuisance and unsolicited calls at a cost of £84. The victim agreed to buy the device and handed over her bank details.
The device did not arrive in the post and after checking her bank statement, the woman found the money had been taken from her account. She has since changed her account to prevent any further losses.
PC Richard Winward from Lyme Regis police said: "Never give your bank details to anyone unless you know exactly who there are.
"Always be suspicious. Every year there are tens of thousands of victims of fraud, resulting in the loss of millions of pounds.
"All of us, young and old need to wise up with regard to fraud. There are people out there who no longer have to go out and steal things because it is so easy to trick people into parting with their money, either on the phone, online or on your doorstep."
