THE Bridport Branch of the Royal Naval Association (RNA) held its annual dinner celebrating Trafalgar Day.

Around 40 ‘Shipmates’ attended the formal function at Highlands End. After the four-course meal and prior to the dancing, the presentation of the Nelson-Trafalgar Trophy was made to ‘Shipmate’ Barry Deaney. Barry has been with the branch for seven years since moving from Dorchester, where he was a member for five years.

He was awarded the trophy as Shipmate of the year 2014 in acknowledgement for services to the branch.

Barry is vice chairman of the branch and is the social secretary and events co-ordinator.

In this capacity he deals with the administration and finances for functions that include the St Georges Day lunch, the summer barbeque, the Trafalgar Dinner and the families Christmas lunch. Much of the success of these events is down to the hard work put in by Barry and his band of helpers.

The trophy was commissioned and donated by branch members Shipmates Vaughan and Carole Nelson and first awarded in 2010
