ENJOY a free talk on the poetry of Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes at the Bridport LSi on Tuesday, March 5 at 7pm.

The Life and Death of a Love Affair - A Talk on the Poetry of Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes will be given by Nims Gribler.

One of the most public marriages in literary history, the story and the poetry of Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes still resonates with us today.

This is a free taster-talk for anyone who might be interested in contemporary literature but also acts as warm-up for the six-week short course to follow.

The course will aim to open up that relationship a little by looking at themes that emerge from their work – nature, birth, death, betrayal, love and children.

Each week you will study two poems – one from each poet, building a clearer understanding of this complex and insightful couple and what they made of the world they lived in. At times cruel, joyful and always with such a succinct and intelligent way with words, this course would suit anyone of any age to develop their reading of poetry and an interest in these two, sadly missing, wonderful 20th century poets.

No prior knowledge is needed, just a keen and open mind – some of the subjects are a little dark.

You will be provided with all the poetry but a local bookshop will be on hand with fresh copies of their anthologies and some of their biographies in case you wanted to go further, however, there is no extensive reading list.

Tutor Nims Gribler has been an English teacher for the last 15 years both here in the UK and abroad in Portugal teaching EFL to local students in Portalegre. Her interests are largely with poetry and plays and she takes a keen interest in the cultural context of the poets and playwrights she has studied. As a Head of English for a local secondary school for 6 years, she is now working for herself as a tutor, a marker for Cambridge University and the owner of Bar Noir, a vintage cocktail bar on wheels in the summer months.

Course dates (all 7-9pm);

Tuesday March 19, Tuesday, March 26, Tuesday April 2, (Easter Break), Tuesday April 23, Tuesday April 30, Tuesday May 7. The course costs £60
