SO here we all are in October, wondering where the year is gone and feeling a definite chill in the air.

There’s a good reason for that; It’s the passage of time and the changing of the seasons, but we can be sure of one thing… Winter is coming.

No, not that doofus out of Game of Thrones but Kip Winter, the Scottish singer who claims to ‘pootle’ on guitar, piano and ukulele and, alongside guitarist hubbie Dave Wilson, has spent most of this year on yet another farewell tour with folk-rock legends Fairport Convention.

Last weekend Winter Wilson were gigging with Lindisfarne and this weekend they’re with other assorted beardies, hairies and cloggies at the Derby Folk Festival.

And they’re coming this way next Friday, October 12 with a date at the compact and bijou Osmington village hall, conveniently situated in the village of Osmington, near Dorchester.

Not only will they be playing songs from their critically-acclaimed new album Far Off On The Horizon, they’ll be the added incentive of some fish and chips for the gathered throng.

It’s the hall’s latest Gig and Chips offering so book your plaice now (sorry…) with tickets at £10 plus extra for your dinner from 07816 832554.

Nom, nom, nom…

Moving on, and there are a couple of fundraising events coming up, starting tomorrow, Saturday, October 6 at The Boat That Rocks on Portland Marina from 2pm.

Some of the most popular bands around are donating their time and not inconsiderable talents to help raise money for the Lombok Earthquake fund.

Take a look at this lot: Shooter, Elijah, Wolf, Rob Davis, Flic Keirle and Grace Fahy, The Secrets, Studio 55, C Sharp Blues, Hustle, John Stone Band, Ambush, Stereoironics. That's a pretty impressive line-up by anyone's standards, so do look by and give generously, okay?

And the legendary WOB will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of their classic Straight On Till Morning album with a UK tour which comes to Dorchester's Old Ship boozeria next Sunday, October 14.

And they'll be supported by such local luminaries as Chris Kipper Roberts, Edd Bleach, The Skones and Ansell & Gretal and there'll be a collection in aid of immunotherapy for cancer, so you know what to do. Dig deep. It all starts from 2pm next Sunday.

And finally, live music fans have been shocked and saddened by the untimely death of soul singer Scott Bench-Taylor, who passed away this week in Benidorm.

Scott, who was just 43, gigged regularly in Weymouth and was due to play at the Spice Ship's Soulvember event next month.

Spice Ship landlady Wendy Buckingham tells me: “Scott loved The Spice Ship and was so looking forward to coming over to perform.

“He would have wanted the show to go on as he loved soul and Motown music.

“He was very much the Soul Man and we will celebrate his life with the music he loved and he will be with us in spirit,” says Wendy.

Soulvember takes place at the Spice Ship on November 17, with Detroit Magic, Baby Love, Groovemeister and Alexis celebrating the glory that is soul and Motown. Tickets are £15 from the pub.

n Thanks to all the bands and venues who have used the new email address for your gigs. Keep ‘em coming in to echogigguide@outlook.com

Till next time…
