MATT TAYLOR BAND
Dorchester Arts Centre
Reviewed by Lewis A Harris
WITH a 20-year career behind him Matt Taylor gave a consummate display of guitar virtuosity, very ably supported by bass player Mark Smith and drummer Pete Radcliffe.
This was a very tight power house trio!
Despite some initial sound problems the band locked in and began to swing.
BB King's 'Rock me Baby' being a good example.
One of Matt's own numbers 'Two strong arms' was a display of soaring and dipping, executing some very good licks!
The rest of the set was a mixture of Cheryl Crow, Freddy King and KC Douglas, driving, funky, up-tempo songs.
The second set got even better with extended workouts especially on Macey O'Merriweathers 'Worried life blues'.
Not content to just stay in the blues idiom they showed how versatile they can be by playing Paul Simon's 'Late in the evening' followed that with the Beatles 'Come togethe', then did an instrumental tribute to James Brown - very funky - finishing off with 'Radio city blues' a loud and wild tour de force.
A very nice encore of S Terry/B McGhee's 'Walk on'.
The whole evening summed up in the comment of one member of the audience - 'a very good gig'.
