History Of The Old School House.

Dating from c1500 this is the remaining West Wing of a much larger Hall House, and was the Schoolteachers’ residence until the 1950s. The abundance of carved beams still visible in the house indicate that the front part at least was originally open to the roof, with the upper floor inserted and chimney extension being added in the late 16th century. The wide oak staircase, a central feature of the house, is of unknown origin, but may have been inserted to give easy access for children when used as extra classrooms for the school! The daughter of one of the last schoolmasters to live there writes that as a child she discovered an old well for drawing water beneath the coalhouse floor at the back of the premises, although no sign of this now remains.

Formerly part of Lord Long’s estate, the Old School House ceased to be used for the school in about the 1950s, and after some years of neglect was sold into private ownership in the 1980s. Only 2 families have owned it since then, and much improved it to become the fascinating and comfortable home that it is today.
