West Dorset District coun-cillor for Bridport North Keith Day is absolutely correct when he describes West Bay as being in urgent need of repair and regeneration.

The whole area needs a makeover.

At the moment this once beautiful location is still living off ‘the Broadchurch effect’.

The winter storms cannot be blamed for the ongoing catalogue of neglect, bad planning and mismanagement by district, county and, to a lesser extent, town councils.

West Dorset District Council in particular, does not listen to the concerns of local people (long live the West Bay Business Forum) nor do they learn from their mistakes such as the Haddon House pinch point and road direction policy or lack of pedestrian crossings. An apology seems out of the question.

The harbourmaster hasn’t helped by closing off the whole of what was a public area adjoining the small slipway.

It has become a glorified parking area for a few chosen people, some with boats, some not.

The now restricted access area is excessive for the boat movements enacted. These actions have rendered the whole expensive ‘Mound’ project of just a few years ago, a total waste of money.

On a more positive note everyone from our local MP to little ol’ me, plus frequent users of the coast road to Weymouth, warned of the dangers of the removal of white lines and cats’ eyes on that dangerous stretch of highway.

We were all ignored.

Now there has been an outbreak of common sense, albeit with the rider of more unnecessary expense to the council tax payer, as the lines and cats’ eyes are reinstated.

If this can be done, why can’t West Bay be put right too? The recent almost complete refund of £29million from the Icelandic bank fiasco should be enough for even this council to meet all of West Bay’s needs.
