Partnership key to Halloran deal

DECISION TIME: Alex Halloran, right DECISION TIME: Alex Halloran, right

CHRIS Luke could hold the key to convincing Alex Halloran to sign on at St Mary’s Field according to assistant-manager Mike Savage.

With Portland United keen to retain the ex-Weymouth midfielder and Hamworthy United also after his signature, Bridport know this week is make or break in their hopes of pulling off what would be a major coup ahead of the new season.

Savage, whose side will kick-off their Toolstation Western League Premier Division campaign with a trip to Barnstaple Town on August 4, said: “Having lost Sam and Joe Charles to long-term injuries and with Tom Richardson out for the foreseeable future with a virus, we desperately need to bring in a couple of new faces to freshen things up a bit.

“Alex has been with us recently as has Simon Baines but at the moment both of them are still not sure what they are doing.

“They would both be fantastic additions for us and hopefully they will decide to come here but we will just have to wait and see.

“Chris Luke missed our last friendly against Portland but he is back with us this week and if we can get Alex playing alongside him I think they would both really like it.

“Hopefully, Alex will turn out in one of the matches this week because having those two linking up together in the midfield would be very exciting indeed.”

Two players that have sorted out their futures are Dan Peart and Shane Evans.

Savage went on to add: “Dan has gone to Wimborne Town but Shane has come back now and is staying.

“Shane was our best player when he was playing at the back in the first half of last season but he then wanted to play up front.

“He can also do a job on the wing and it is just a case of getting his mindset right because when it is he can be a top player for us.”

Bridport were left frustrated on Saturday when Hillingdon Borough postponed their meeting at St Mary’s Field just 24 hours beforehand due to a lack of players.

However, the Bees were scheduled to be in action at Westland Sports last night and will also host a Plymouth Argyle XI tomorrow (7.45pm) as well as Bournemouth Poppies on Saturday (3pm).
