WINCANTON TOWN 2 Bridport RESERVES 0 RESERVE-TEAM boss Steve Crabb was delighted with his side’s display, despite seeing them go down at title-chasing Wincanton Town.
The Bees dominated the Magna Dorset Premier League encounter for large periods but their unbeaten hosts capitalised on an injury to visiting keeper Jamie Fry with two fortuitous goals.
Describing the action, Crabb said: “I’m disappointed with the result but not the performance.
“We played really well in the first 20 minutes and we were the better side by a long way.
“Ben Clarke had an effort that just cleared the bar and then we had one that was cleared off the line.
“Jamie Fry was then involved in a collision with their striker and suffered a dead leg.
“We decided to keep him on but on the half-hour they had a free-kick from 30 yards, which was on Jamie’s bad side and unfortunately he couldn’t get down to it.
“They built up some momentum but in the second half we were still the better side and we had the better chances.
“Their keeper made a great save from Robin Jones, who then hit the crossbar with a header.
“Jamie couldn’t kick so was throwing the ball out instead, but on 70 minutes he threw it straight to one of their players and they made it 2-0.
“If he hadn’t got injured we would have got something from the game, which is encouraging as Wincanton are the only unbeaten side in the league.
“They certainly got away with it on Saturday but we’re not blaming Jamie, the goals were down to his injury.
“He held his hands up and said sorry but we have been indebted to him this season.”
Bridport Reserves take a break from league action this weekend as they host lower-league Piddletrenthide in the last eight of the Dorset Senior Trophy (3pm).
Crabb added: “We should be the favourites as we’re in a higher league but we do have a few players (Robin Jones, Roger Cummings and Adam Steele) who can’t play because they played for the first team in the Dorset Senior Cup.
“We did though have Gary Bulman and Chris Herbst back at the weekend and it was good to see them get 30 minutes.”
Bees: Fry, Hill, Fellows, Day, C Bulman, Steele, McAllister, Jones (Herbst 60), B Clarke, Gale, Scovell (G Bulman 60). Sub not used: Lock.
