BRIDPORT Reserves were the architects of their own downfall as they crashed to a self-inflicted 2-0 defeat at home to Wincanton Town on Saturday.
Two first-half blunders proved the Bees’ undoing and confirmed a result that has seen them drop below Cranborne to second-bottom in the Dorset Premier League.
James Maidment opted not to clear his lines deep in his own territory and instead passed inside to Ashley Clarke, whose untimely stumble allowed Mustapha Taylor to profit.
And on the stroke of half-time utility man Tom Coggins was dispossessed and watched on helplessly as Taylor netted his second.
Referring to his side’s fatal errors, Bees’ boss Mike Savage said: “I was so disappointed because there should have been no messing about in those situations.
“On each occasion we made the wrong decision. Instead of clearing the ball we got caught and were punished by conceding twice.
“I had been confident that we would get something out of the game and I definitely see it as an opportunity missed, because Wincanton weren’t as strong as they have been.
“Overall I thought we played pretty well, especially in the second half, but we were already 2-0 behind and it was tough to come back from that scoreline.”
Savage added: “We were feeling good after the cup win on Tuesday night but you could see the confidence drain out of the players when we conceded.”
Ben Clarke spurned a golden opportunity to draw first blood at St Mary’s Field before Wincanton, who could scarcely believe their opponents’ charity, did just that.
And when lightning struck again, the Bees were faced with a mountain to climb to rescue something from the match.
Roger Cummings came close to halving the deficit in the second half, as did Chris Symes’ whose goal-bound header was scrambled off the line.
But Wincanton safeguarded their advantage and closed out the game to sentence the Bees to their 12th league defeat of the season.
Bees Reserves: Tozer, J Maidment, A Clarke, Fry, Herbst, C Bulman, Cummings, Coggins, M Bulman, B Clarke (Gale 60), C Symes.
