BEN Clarke propelled Bridport Reserves into the quarter-finals of the Dorset Senior Trophy with a hat-trick against Wincanton Town Reserves last night.
This much-postponed second round tie finally got the go-ahead at St Mary’s Field and the Bees came through 4-1 to book an away date with Shaftesbury Reserves next Wednesday.
Bridport failed to unlock lower-league Wincanton in the first half and fell behind when the visitors netted a penalty just after the resumption.
However, Clarke got to work with three goals in the space of 20 minutes as the home side seized the initiative and dissected their opponents.
The sharpshooter tucked home from close range on the hour and when Jamie Fry unleashed a thunderous free-kick that soared into the top corner, the Bees were ahead.
Clarke benefited from excellent interplay between Dan Jones and Dominic McAllister to notch his second before completing his hat-trick five minutes from time.
And boss Mike Savage, who admitted to being relieved, said: “We needed this win to give us some confidence and it was a decent performance considering the lads were very rusty.
“It was a struggle to start with and we created so many chances in the first half but just couldn’t take them.
“But once we had scored our second goal we ripped them apart. Hopefully we can build on this win and kick on, because we need to start winning league games.”
Bees Res: Tozer, J Maidment, Herbst, A Clarke, Fry, Coggins, C Bulman (M Bulman 65), Cummings (McAllister 65), Jones, B Clarke, C Symes (Gale 80).
