BEES: Bridport need to find winning formula
A 90-MINUTE performance is what Bridport boss Trevor Senior wants to see from his team when they take on Slimbridge at St Mary’s Field this Saturday (3pm).
Senior feels the Bees are close to putting a string of positive results together in the Toolstation West-ern League Premier Division, but at the moment they can’t quite seem to find the winning formula.
Bridport delivered a strong second-half display at Bristol Manor Farm last time out but in the end they returned to West Dorset with nothing to show for their efforts after going down 3-2.
Goals from Darren Watts and Ryan Dovell, who will be fit for the Slimbridge clash despite coming off in Bristol with a knee injury, weren’t enough to prevent back-to-back league defeats.
Premier Division new boys Slimbridge aren’t in the greatest form either and sit two places off the foot of the table following a 4-2 reverse against Bishop Sutton last Saturday.
“We need to tidy things up at the back, but to be fair, our defence has been quite good this season,” said Senior.
“We made a couple of mistakes on Saturday but we are not far away from getting on a run and the lads are confident enough.
“The lads were great in the second half on Saturday and we just need to be on it for the full 90, which is not what we are doing at the moment. It seems to be one good half and one bad half, so if we can be more consistent, we will start picking up points.”
Chris Senior will come in at right-back for the unavailable Jamie Filkins and there could be a new face in the Bridport squad.
Chard centre-back Mark Scott was the subject of a seven-day approach from the Bees’ manager and the two have held talks this week.
And having a fit Dovell is crucial after he demonstrated his potency at Bristol Manor Farm, converting a Dan Wise cross to make it 1-1 after the hosts had taken the lead.
Conceding two goals in 10 minutes wasn’t what Bridport wanted before the break but they came out for the second half a different side.
An inspired Sam Filkins was at full stretch to deny Bristol a fourth then Watts’ shot from 25 yards flew in to reduce the lead to one.
Condliffe, Chris Clarke and Dovell had further efforts and right at the end, Max Buckler was denied when his long-range drive was tipped on to the post by the home keeper.
Bees: S Filkins, J Filkins (Senior 75), Staines (Evans 46), Clarke, Watts, Hayter, Luke, Wise, Richardson (M Buckler 78), Dovell, Condliffe
