BRIDPORT have won the Dorset FA Under-16s’ Futsal title.

The Bees beat Futsal specialists Wessex Barbarians in a thrilling final at Redlands Sports Hub in Weymouth, where the county qualifiers for all age groups competed.

Despite trailing 3-1 after a few minutes, they had levelled the score to 5-5 at half-time and did not concede a goal in the second half to finish 8-5 winners.

Bridport manager Terry Warren said: “I was really pleased with the skill and determination the boys showed against a much more experienced Futsal side.

“Although we practice weekly with a Futsal ball we don’t have the facilities to play on an actual Futsal court.

“We’d all like to thank James at Bridport Youth Club for use of the hall for training and Dorset Youthbank for a grant towards kit.”

The qualifiers were part of the FA National Youth Futsal Festival and Bridport now progress to the Regional Finals to be held in Swindon in May.

n Futsal is an indoor football game, recognised by FIFA and UEFA. Its name comes from Futbol de Salao (Hall Football) that was developed in Brazil in the 1930s because of a lack of grass football pitches.

It is a fast moving five-a-side game played with a size four low bounce ball to encourage skill and passing. It is the most played game in Brazil and generations of top South American players have developed their skills playing Futsal.
