BRIDPORT will host Weymouth at St Mary’s Field next Tuesday in a friendly match held to help boost the home side’s financial plight.

The Bees’ Toolstation Western Premier Division match at Bristol Manor Farm was postponed on Saturday due to rain but boss Trevor Senior confirmed the date for the Terras’ game had been set.

The encounter on January 22 will, of course, be dependent on the weather and a kick-off time is still to be finalised.

But Senior knows how much something like this could aid Bridport, who have struggled this season because of a lack of home fixtures in the first half of the campaign.

As well as the friendly they now have three home matches in succession with Winterbourne United and Brislington arriving for league fixtures on the next two Saturdays.

Senior and his squad, including new loan signing Jamie Symes, were frustrated again at the weekend while virtually the whole of the Western League programme was wiped out.

While disappointed not to be involved in league action on Saturday, Senior was thrilled to have a date set for the visit of Weymouth in just over a week’s time.

“It will be great for the club,” he said. “We thought they were going to be playing Kettering Town that night but we saw each other at the Dorchester game last Tuesday and everything is okay for the 22nd.

“We’ve also got someone looking at the commercial side of things at the club so it’s moving in the right direction.

“It’s just very frustrating we didn’t play on Saturday because we’ve only played once now since December 15.

“We’ve got games in hand on some teams but having the points would be better. We just need to put a bit of a run together and get some continuity.

“But it doesn’t really help when the games are being called off like they are.”

Senior is also delighted to have Symes and striker Ryan Dovell back together in the same team.

The two found the back of the net regularly for the Bees during their last promotion-winning campaign and everyone at the club is hopeful they can carry on where they left off last time.

“Jamie won’t be playing up front with Ryan but he can play anywhere and is dangerous wherever he plays,” added Senior.

“The two of them scored a lot of goals when we were in division one and hopefully they can do it again this time.

“It’s just disappointing that one of Jamie’s weeks on loan has gone and he wasn’t able to play. Let’s hope that game can be rearranged for when he is still here.”
