WIMBORNE SECONDS 55 BRIDPORT 0

BRIDPORT travelled to play Wimborne Seconds and came up against a team that proved far fitter and more dynamic in their approach to the game.

The Blues contested the scrums extremely well but it was not enough to prevent a devastating 55-0 defeat.

The game very much rev-olved around the ability of Wimborne to move the ball quickly between forwards and backs with superb handling, and, at times, the poor tackling and cover of the Bridport defence.

Playing against a strong wind, the opening 10 minutes saw the visitors attack the Wimborne line with good tactical kicking from Rory Greening.

However, as a pre-warning to the whole game, the home side countered quickly along their three-quarters and, with the help of some poor tackling, scored in the corner against the run of play.

From the restart, Wimborne then attacked again and although bundled into touch, managed to grab a converted try from the resulting line-out to take a 12-0 lead.

Bridport did well territorially during the remainder of the half, and despite losing another try from a fast Wimborne three-quarter line attack, they nearly scored twice in res-ponse.

Will Hegarty broke through and was only just denied before good scrum ball saw Dave Cutting get within a metre of the line before being tackled.

From the resulting scrum, James Ewert, the Bridport man of the match, was again foiled, being held up just short.

With nothing to show for their efforts, the Blues then succumbed to another quick counter, which stretched Wimborne’s lead to 24-0 at the break.

At the start of the second half, Bridport spent 10 minutes on the attack but despite having the wind at their backs they were unable to break through with Lee Burdett and Ewert again going close.

To make matters worse Wimborne then added two more scores either side of another near miss at the other end involving Greening.

The home forwards then combined for another try to make it 41-0 before two more finally completed the scoring.

The penultimate touchdown came from a quick tap penalty while the last one was the result of a good break.

To their credit, Bridport never stopped working throughout but although they have a good squad, training under the guise of coach Krissie Washington, they are suffering from a lack of three- quarters, which is making it necessary to play players out of position each week.

This week the first team are home to Blandford with the seconds facing Crewkerne.
