SWANAGE & WAREHAM SECONDS 21

BRIDPORT 63

BRIDPORT ended their Dorset & Wilts One South season on a high, running in 10 tries to see off the hosts with the minimum of fuss.

Centres Ricky Stubbs and Will Haggerty each registered a brace of tries while Wesley Lewis, Mike Pibworth, Rob Leins, Donald Farmer, Nathan Herbert and Jasper Mowatt also touched down.

Scrum-half Lewis scored 18 points altogether as victory for Bridport saw them complete a league double over the Swans and made sure they ended the campaign in sixth place.

Team manager Arthur Barclay described his team’s performance as “absolutely tremendous” and reckons that if they can play like that on a regular basis and get consistency in team selection, the league could be there for the taking next season.

“It was a tremendous end to the season and we couldn’t have asked for more,” he said. “It was a cracking game and probably the best we’ve played since before Christmas. We got to see the ball go along the line and that’s the way forward for us as we have a small pack.

“Our way of playing is an expansive game and if we hold onto the ball we will do well.

“It’s just a pity we couldn’t have played like that from Christmas onwards. If we had we’d have put ourselves in a better position.

“But finishing mid-table gives us something to build on.”

He continued: “This is a good league but it’s winnable. The confidence and ability is there with us, we just need the commitment.

“We need a bigger squad and we’ve got to get everybody training and playing the sort of rugby we are good at.”

Lewis, skipper Stubbs, Pibworth, Hagg-erty and Leins crossed in the first half as Bridport took a 30-11 lead into the inter- val.

The hosts hit back with a try straight after the break but Farmer, Haggerty, Herbert, Mowatt and Stubbs sealed a resounding triumph.
