ANGUS Nicoll claimed the Roy Thompson Cup after a fine display at Bridport & West Dorset Golf Club, writes Peter Crow-ter.

A modest turnout of 44 took the field for the veterans’ competition, which was a Medal played off the white tees.

Once again it was the lush grass off the fairways that caused more problems than the weather and 12 men handed in no result cards.

Division One coped better with the conditions and their top eight players all beat the best nett score in the lower division, which was a nett 75 by Gil Roberts.

Following his win in the veterans’ competition on captain’s day, Keith Mundy had to settle for runners-up spot this time as his score of 71 was trumped by Nicoll’s 70.

RESULTS Division One: 1 Angus Nicoll 83-13-70 (Lg), 2 Keith Mundy 91-20-71, 3 Tim Bassett 90-18-72, 4 Nick Franks 85-12-73.

Division Two: 1 Gil Roberts 97-22-75 (Lg), 2 David Northover 99-22-77, 3 (acb) Colin Clark 100-22-78, 4 Raymond Lowe 105-27-78.

Bridport won their away match at Lyme Regis 3½-2½, thus retaining the coveted Nantes Salver.

* The scores returned on Sunday in the men’s August Medal reflected the freakish summer weather we have had to cope with this year.

Twenty-seven of the 71 starters failed to finish as a result but of those that completed the course, Division Two’s Karl McGrady won the medal with the only sub-70 nett score of the day – 68.

Derek Griggs topped Division Three with a respectable nett 72 and Pat Woolmington led Division One with an excellent gross 73 and a nett 70.

Division Three: 1 Derek Griggs 93-21-72, 2 (acb) Terry Kearley 93-19-74, 3 (acb) Tony Edwards 101-27-74.

Ian Thacker’s Hardy B team continued their unbeaten record this season by winning their home match against Dudsbury 4-1.

* Due to the rotten weather at the start of the summer, Friendly Matches had to be postponed and are now playing catch-up, writes Lyn Hargrave.

First, the ladies played away to Came Down and were beaten 4-0 before turning the tables with a 4-0 win of their own at home to Windwhistle.

That was followed by a 3-1 defeat at Yeovil.

Also taking place was the Ladies’ Club Championship.

On a hectic day, competitors were vying not only for the Scratch Cup but the Green Salver, the Kath Joslin Cup (for the over-65s) and a Stableford (for the under-65s).

Nicky Stone won the Scratch Cup with a cracking margin of 10 shots.
