HEATHCOTE SECONDS 336-6 (18pts) bt UPLYME & LYME REGIS 195 (7pts) by 141 runs

A DEPLETED Uplyme & Lyme Regis side suffered a heavy defeat to Heathcote Seconds to stay rooted to the bottom of D Division East of the Devon League.

Uplyme were missing numerous players due to injury and players at university.

Heathcote batted first and saw a commanding performance despite dropped catches from the Uplyme fielders.

Despite getting opening Heathcote batsman Guy Bucknell out after just one run with a one-handed diving catch from John Waterhouse, it would be another 95 conceded before Uplyme next made an inroad to the home side’s batting.

Jake Stoneman hit 116 before being caught by Jed Whittington while an 84 from Simon Sobczak helped increase the home side’s lead as they fought to set a 336 target for Uplyme.

Uplyme’s batting efforts started off badly, losing opener Charlie Moss before a run had been put on the board.

A 46 from Jed Whittington helped to narrow the gap but Uplyme were unable to make serious inroads as they could manage 195 in response to Heathcote.

Uplyme captain Laurie Thomas said: “It was a very encouraging loss. They are a decent side the boys we played against and we did not have a full complement of players and, considering the situation we were presented with, I do not think anyone disgraced themselves whatsoever.”
