BEAMINSTER captain Ross Baker is looking to “focus hard” on home victories following promotion as they start their season in the Dorset County Division Two.

Beaminster will be hosting Wimborne & Colehill Seconds in their first match of the new season and the team are looking forward to it.

“We are all looking forward to it. We hope to consolidate our place and see how we go,” Baker said.

“We will focus hard on our home games and try and get as many home victories as we can and then try and get a few away victories as well but our focus is on playing well at home and then look to stabilise our position in the league at mid table and then if we do well maybe go on a run like we did last year.”

Beaminster earned their promotion after finishing second in Division Three last year and Baker admits it will be nice to play more first teams.

He said: “”It will be nice to play some different teams, it will be nice to play some first teams, the last couple of years have been a bit different because we have played against sides that sometimes you play against really strong sides and other times a bit weaker ones but I think this year it will be a pretty even spread of teams.

“We have got one more training session tomorrow and then we are good to go for Saturday.

“The forecast is looking a bit better so the pitch will hopefully dry out a little bit more. We are looking forward to it.”

Beaminster had their pre-season matches cancelled due to the weather.

When asked if the players feel ready in light of this, Baker said: “I think so. A few of the players played other games like evening league games in Dorchester, our pitch has not been ready but I think it has been the same for quite a few different clubs.

“We have not been able to play very much but we have trained quite well and we have just got round it by having nets and more fielding practice.”

The club hopes to have a new scoreboard in place for Saturday’s match and the club have a new net area for training.

The club have also made two signings in Ollie Bareham from Bridport and Joe Hawkins.
