BRIDPORT Gig Rowing Club’s men’s and ladies’ teams put on fabulous performances at their respective county championships held in Newquay, to secure their best ever results at this prestigious event.

The format is a knockout style event over two days, meaning time is everything.

The ladies’ A, B and C crews raced in rough seas against tough opposition round the two-mile course in Newquay Bay to secure their best ever results.

The C crew, racing for the first time in Newquay, finished 94th out of 99 teams, missing out on a place in the second round, while the B team came second in their first heat, resulting in an automatic promotion into round two, where they secured 46th place overall.

The A crew put in two fast races on day one, going through to day two to be knocked out in the quarter-finals, finishing 23rd overall.

Meanwhile, Bridport’s men’s B crew finished sixth in their heat, with a time of 16 minutes, narrowly missing out on a place in the next round by a matter of seconds.

The A crew secured a fast time giving them a place in round two, within which they rowed over the line in a strong second place.

This provided the chance to row in the quarter-finals the next morning.

Tough conditions on the Sunday made for exciting races against very strong crews.

The men’s A rowed well but did not make the semi-finals. Their overall placing was 21st, with the men’s B 52nd.

Falmouth men’s A won the championship, with Caradon A second.

The club’s next event is a big breakfast, being held at the Salthouse, West Bay on Sunday, October 16.

All are welcome, 9am-1pm, adults £6 and primary school children £3.
